Why Steps for Our Logo?

We use steps for our logo for a few reasons. The first happened around the time I came up with the idea of life wear featuring inspirational quotes from inspirational people in 2015. Around that time, I was working with a leader named Shonda Shorters, who eventually became one of my mentors. Sadly, she passed away in 2018 but in the short time we knew each other, she made some lifelong impressions.

As with any job, there’d be times we encountered challenges that seemed insurmountable. However, Shonda would remind me that if I trusted my strengths, learned from my mistakes and believed in myself, I could figure out how to overcome them. To do this, she’d use one simple phrase: “There are no elevators to the top, you have to take the stairs.”

Over time, that expression grew to mean several things to me, including:

  • Taking the stairs makes you stronger because there are no cheat codes or work arounds in corporate America.

  • Taking the stairs teaches you resilience and perseverance.

  • Taking the stairs makes you do the work and lets you earn what comes to you!

  • Taking the stairs also helps you learn how to find your authentic voice.

  • Taking the stairs teaches you resilience, patience, and perseverance.

But most importantly, I learned that the higher you climb, the more confident you become in the path you’re on and what – or who – got you there. Where I’m from, we call that “faith.”

I also learned some valuable life lessons on the steps of the houses of family and friends growing up in Detroit. And one of my favorite places to sit and ponder life’s meaning? You guessed it: at home on the steps of my front porch.

So, when I got the idea for DDG, it didn’t take long to pick a logo that represented how I want to inspire others by sharing faith, wisdom and experiences from all over the world along with a few of my own.

Welcome to Deep Thoughts from The Steps. Let’s make the climb together.
